I’m glad you have found Better Family Videos. There are a ton of sites out there on that “World Wide Web” that can teach you all sorts of neat things to do with regards to film and movie making. They can show you how to build equipment with adult tinker-toys (PVC pipe and fittings), various size skate wheels, some nuts & bolts, and a little duct-tape. There are sites out there that can show you how to recreate all sorts of lighting and sound effects. I’ve even come across a number of sites that will break down film footage showing you the camera angles used, special effects used, microphone placement and so on.
Then there are the sites that will show you how to edit your movie using hardware and software that can, and does, cost thousands of dollars. And let’s not forget that elephant in the room, YouTube. 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute! (Admittedly, some are better than others….) Of those, there are untold numbers of videos that purport to show and tell you all about video-editing, sound-editing, cameras, which DSLR is the best, which light-stand is on sale, etc., etc..
There is one thing, however, that separates you from all those fledgling film and movie makers–you can’t call, “CUT!” You are trying to capture your child’s utterance of “Ma ma”. You are capturing your child graduating from high-school. You just taped your son or daughter missing that winning catch on the ball-field. Your camera was running when Aunt Lucy blew out the candles on the birthday cake along with her dentures. All you have on you is your cell-phone when your wife decides to take up karaoke after dinner with your boss.
These are once-in-a-lifetime events that you can’t direct. There are no “do overs”. You don’t get to stop everything to adjust a light or add a spot or a filter. You have to run-n-gun as the journalists would say. And that is where we come in. Better Family Videos will be showing tricks, tips, and techniques to enable you to capture those memories, without spending thousands on equipment. From the simple to the complex and demystifying everything in between.
Stay tuned, there will be a lot more coming!
Well, I haven’t really “launched” yet. Still getting setup but check back in another few weeks and we should be going full-steam.
